Transcription for Private Investigators: Recorded Interviews and Statements
By Juris Compiler AI · Updated September 27, 2026
Juris Compiler turns a recorded interview or witness statement into a speaker-labeled, timestamped transcript you can search, correct, and quote. You can then question the record, scan it for statements in tension, and generate a first-draft investigator report.
It costs $0.75 per minute of recording, so a 30-minute interview is $22.50. What you get is a working transcript for your review, not a certified record.
The job, and why a transcript helps
A lot of investigative work ends up on a recording: witness interviews, subject interviews, recorded statements, and phone calls you were a party to. You cannot search a recording, skim it, or paste a line of it into a report. In Juris Compiler, each transcript line is one speaker turn with:
- A speaker label. Voices are separated automatically and labeled A, B, C until you give them names.
- A start time, so you can find the passage in your original file.
- A confidence score, color-coded, so the lines the engine was least sure of stand out.
You can search each transcript for a name or a date, or file interviews under a matter and search across all of them. Transcription is English only and works from a finished recording, not a live call.
Recording consent: check the law that applies
Our Terms of Service make you responsible for having the legal right to upload each recording, including any required consents. The federal baseline is 18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(d). That provision does not make it unlawful for a person not acting under color of law to record a conversation they are part of, or one where a party has given prior consent, unless the recording is made to commit a criminal or tortious act.
The federal rule alone does not settle whether a recording is lawful, because state law can be stricter. A call across state lines can raise questions about which law applies. As common practice, many interviewers say at the start that they are recording and get the person's agreement on tape.
From recording to reviewed transcript
Our step-by-step transcription guide covers each step in more detail.
Upload and name the speakers
Add audio or video files such as MP3, MP4, WAV, or MOV, up to 10 in one upload with one payment. You can file them under a matter now or later. The engine labels voices A, B, C but does not know who anyone is, so rename each label, for example B to the witness's name. Names carry into the PDF and drafted documents. If a line landed on the wrong speaker, reassign it.
Check the flagged lines
Every line shows the engine's confidence, color-coded green, amber, or red, and the least certain lines get an extra amber marker on the left edge. Check those against your original before you quote them, along with passages that have crosstalk or weak phone audio.
Correct with an audit trail
Correct any line in place. The original machine wording is kept, and the edit history records the before and after text, who made the change, and when, including speaker reassignments. The history stays in the app; the PDF shows the corrected text only.
The demo shows this review screen with a fictional deposition, including the contradiction finder and Ask the Record. It does not include drafted reports or redaction.
Working the statement
Ask the Record
Ask a plain-English question about one transcript, such as when the witness says she left the building. The answer is grounded in the transcript, and the model is told to say so when the record does not contain it. Answers are not saved and can be wrong, so check them against the lines themselves.
Contradiction Finder
On demand, the contradiction finder scans one transcript for pairs of statements in tension. Each pair has a topic, a severity, a short explanation, and both quotes with speaker and timestamp. Treat them as potential issues flagged for review, not conclusions.
It compares statements within a single transcript only, not a witness's first interview against a second. For that, transcribe both, group them under the same matter, and review them side by side.
The investigator report first draft
The Investigator report button drafts an Investigative Report with sections for Case Overview, a Chronology with timestamps, Key Findings, Persons of Interest, and Recommendations. The model writes it from the transcript, your speaker names, and the matter details, and is told not to speculate beyond the record. You cannot point it at a particular person or issue.
It is labeled a draft and cannot be edited in the app. Copy it as text or print it to PDF, check it against the transcript, and finish it in your own report. A printed copy says it is not an official or final document and carries a reviewer signature line.
Sharing with a client or attorney
Juris Compiler has no shared workspaces or invites, so a client or attorney sees your work only through what you export or copy out. A paid transcript exports as a formatted PDF with a caption block, numbered lines with timestamps and speaker names, and a reviewer signature line. It is marked as AI-generated and not a certified transcript, and it does not use court-style page and line numbers. Transcripts processed entirely on free minutes cannot be exported as PDF or SRT.
The Redact PII toggle masks identifiers the engine detects, such as names, phone numbers, locations, dates of birth, and Social Security and account numbers. The redacted PDF applies the same masking to speaker names, the case summary, and the caption fields. The original transcript is not altered.
Evidence handling and data
Juris Compiler deletes the uploaded recording from its storage once the transcript is produced, and the app has no audio or video player. Keep your original recording in your own case file, since it is what you check flagged lines against.
The transcript is a working copy, not a certified record or sworn testimony. A recorded statement is also generally not a deposition, and whether and how it can be used later depends on the applicable rules of evidence, which vary by court and state. That is a question for the attorney on the matter. A certified transcript or a witness sworn under oath calls for a court reporter, as our court reporter comparison explains.
If a client or retaining attorney asks how interview recordings are handled, send them our security page, which covers storage, retention, and every subprocessor. Deleting a transcript does not ask the transcription provider to delete its copy, which follows that provider's own terms.
What typical interviews cost
You pay $0.75 per minute of recording, billed per file and rounded up to the whole minute, with a 1-minute minimum. There is no subscription and no monthly minimum.
| Recording length | Example | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 15 min | Short phone statement | $11.25 |
| 30 min | Witness interview | $22.50 |
| 1 hr | Longer interview | $45 |
| 1 hr 30 min | Interview with follow-up | $67.50 |
| 2 hr | Extended interview | $90 |
In a multi-file upload, each file is rounded separately. The exact amount appears on Stripe's checkout page before you confirm, and the pricing page has the full details. If you sign up with Google or Facebook, your first 30 minutes are free with no credit card. Exporting the PDF or SRT needs a paid transcript.
Frequently asked questions
Who is responsible for recording consent when I upload an interview?
You are. The Juris Compiler AI Terms of Service make you responsible for having the legal right to upload each recording, including any required consents. Federal law, 18 U.S.C. 2511(2)(d), does not make it unlawful for a person not acting under color of law to record a conversation they are part of, or one where a party has given prior consent, unless the recording is made to commit a criminal or tortious act. State law can be stricter, and some states require every party's consent.
What sections does the investigator report draft include?
The Investigative Report draft covers a Case Overview, a Chronology with timestamps, Key Findings, Persons of Interest, and Recommendations. One draft is saved on the record, so it reopens without being written again. If you later correct lines or rename speakers, delete the draft and draft it again so it reflects the changes. You can print it or copy it as text even when the transcript was processed entirely on free minutes.
How do I share an interview transcript with a client or attorney?
Export it as a PDF from a paid transcript. The app opens a formatted print page with a caption block, numbered lines with timestamps and speaker names, and the AI case summary if one exists, marked as AI-generated and not certified. Allow pop-ups, then choose Save as PDF in your browser's print dialog. Turn on Redact PII first, and read this page's sharing section for what redaction does not cover. Transcripts processed entirely on free minutes cannot be exported.
Can Juris Compiler AI compare a witness's first statement with a later one?
Not automatically. The contradiction finder looks for statements in tension within a single transcript. To compare two statements, transcribe both, file them under the same matter, and review them side by side. The matter view lists each record's findings together and lets you search testimony across the matter, so you can find the same topic in both. The comparison is yours to make.
Try it on one of your own recordings
Your first 30 minutes are free when you sign up with Google or Facebook, no credit card needed. After that it is $0.75 per minute, and Stripe's checkout page shows the exact amount before you pay.
